Dear Reader:

"We Who Have Read The Girl Detective" -- a play based on a short story by award-winning author Kelly Link* will make its debut on August 30 in Philadelphia.

Stranger Things Happen* Stranger Things Happen, Small Beer Press, July 2001: "quirky and exuberantly imagined," Publishers Weekly; "strange and tantalizing stories," Booklist; "Link's a writer to watch." Kirkus Reviews

Philadelphia-based theater group Invisible Cities will be putting on the play inspired by Kelly Link's story, "The Girl Detective," from August 30 to September 9 at Olde St. Augustine Church, N. 4th New Street (one block north of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge).

Members of the Invisible Cities group read the story when it was originally published online at Ellen Datlow's speculative fiction site, Event Horizon, and then later when it was collected in The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror XIII. On July 11 of this year they traveled up to see Link read "The Girl Detective" at her local bookshop, Book Court (163 Court Street, Brooklyn, 718-875-3677).

Sales from that night were enough to push the book onto the Book Court bestseller list, something owner Henry Zook attributed not only to the reading but also the strong cover illustration and quote from local fave, Jonathan Lethem: "Kelly Link is the exact best and strangest and funniest short story writer on earth that you have never heard of at the exact moment you are reading these words and making them slightly inexact. Now pay for the book."

The play runs concurrently with the World Science Fiction Convention which will be held from August 30 to September 3 at the Philadelphia Convention Center.

Please forward any questions, requests for interviews, &c. to me at this email address.

Sincerely,

Gavin J. Grant
